Gender Equality as a Pillar of the Fourth Industrial Revolution

8 March 2022, Barcelona A World Economic Forum report on the gender gap puts a multi-generational struggle into stark terms: “None of us will see gender parity in our lifetimes, and nor likely will many of our children.”

During the last four years, Citibeats has collected millions of data around topics directly affecting society, such as gender equality.

Appalling worldwide data confirms gender equality is an issue that needs urgent attention to create an inclusive and representative society. Talking about digital acceleration seems absurd given the gender disparity in contexts such as civic participation, rights, access to education, credit, and the labor market. Nonetheless, gender equality can and should be one of the pillars upon which the Fourth Industrial Revolution is built, a new era of humanity seeking to advance artificial intelligence (AI), engineering, and more. 


Barcelona: A Gender Equality Tech Hub 

Barcelona is one of the most active European tech hubs, with over 20 organizations working to promote gender equality in technology and business.

Currently, the digital sector is still predominantly male, with only 29% of female workers and even fewer (19.5%) of women working as specialists within the field of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT).

To shift these percentages, the Barcelona City Council and have launched the Gender Equality Tech Hub (GETHub). This public-private initiative gathers companies from Barcelona sharing the common goal of reducing the gender gap and promoting equality in the tech sector.


Gender Equality as a Cornerstone of Citibeats

Gender equality is one of the core values of Citibeats, with females representing 35% of the workforce, 33% of the tech roles (engineering, product, and presales), and 40% of the C-level roles. New CTO Abby Seneor is one of the 130+ female CTOs in Europe and recipient of the Global Award - Woman Tech Entrepreneur of 2021.

Citibeats’ commitment to gender inclusivity is also evidenced by the creation of Fembeats, an internal initiative launched to integrate the feminist perspective and generate a positive impact on gender issues. Since its inception, Citibeats has created various spaces for conversation among employees to raise awareness around gender inequalities, and has initiated self-assessments to work toward inclusivity within the company. Defining processes to include the gender perspective in all Citibeats projects, the company has also applied its technology to listen to female narratives on issues such as gender violence, harassment, or labor inequalities, among others.

In continuing work on this initiative, Citibeats has joined the new Gender Equality Tech Hub promoted by AllWomen and the Barcelona City Council, seeking to be part of an environment that is committed to gender equality in action.
